Zhenjiang is a municipality under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Provincial Government. It is located on the crossway of the third longest river in the world---the Changjiang River ---and the longest man-made canal in the world---Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It is just like a bright pearl embedded in the well-known golden cross-waterway. Zhenjiang , with a total area of 3,843 square kilometers and a population of 2.9 million, is 250 kilometers away from Shanghai to the east, only 50 kilometers away from Nanjing to the west. It governs Danyang City , Yangzhong City , Dantu District, Jingkou District, Runzhou District and Zhenjiang New Area.
The city proper of Zhenjiang is bounded by the Changjiang River on the north and Nanshan National Forest Park on the south. The ancient Grand Canal flows through the city. Zhenjiang City reveals the magnificence of the Changjiang River and the romantic charm of small bridges over the flowing stream, which is uniquely available in regions south of the Yangtze River . As such, it enjoys the reputation of ^No. 1 Landscape under Heaven ̄. Zhenjiang is rich in natural endowment. With 26 hills in the city proper, the whole city is surrounded by green hills and clean water. In addition to Jinshan Hill, Jiaoshan Hill and Beigu Hill, there are another two hills--- Mount Mao shan and Mount Baohua ---known as the place of origin of Chinese Taoism and a holy land of Buddhism respectively. What is particularly worth mentioning is the Nanshan National Forest Park. Only 2 kilometers away from the downtown area, this park is regarded as the ^liver of Zhenjiang City  ̄ or ^a natural oxygen bar ̄. Just because Zhenjiang City is built against hills, over hills and surrounded by hills, the well-known painter and calligrapher Mi Fu referred to Zhenjiang as ^the Urban Hills and Forest  ̄.
Zhenjiang , with a history of more than 3,000 years and rich cultural heritage, is one of the State-level culturally and historically famous cities and one of the important places of origin of the Wu Culture. Zhenjiang is rich in historic spots and ancient relics and is one of the top tourism cities in China . Men of letters in past dynasties came one after another to visit or even settle in Zhenjiang .
