Zhenjiang-Dagang Local Railway, which is 24.96 kilometers long, links Dagang Habour with Beijing-Shanghai Railway. This local railway was completed and opened to traffic in 1996 and was incorporated into the national railway scheduling system in 2002. It extends as far as to the habour and there are two freight-marshalling stations in Zhenjiang New Area; therefore, there is no need to transit cargos in between. Zhenjiang is one of the two places in East China that have the above advantages. The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, which is now under planning, will cut across Zhenjiang New Area.
