Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal crosses the Changjiang River just beside Zhenjiang New Area to form a golden cross-waterway. At present, the Southern Jiangsu section of the Canal and the section in Zhejiang province are navigable for 500-tonnage barges while the Northern Jiangsu section of the Canal and the section in Shandong province are navigable for 2,000-tonnage barges. Due to its large freight volume (equal to 60% of the total annual freight volume of the Changjiang River), its low freight charges (equal to one sixth of the freight charges by railway) and its access to all the important economic cities in eastern part of China, this canal has now become a major artery of water transport between South China and North China.
